01 · Overview
About torenia
Torenia fournieri, known as wishbone flower, is a low-growing annual. Its trumpet-shaped flowers are two-toned in violets and blues with a yellow patch at the throat. Two stamens meet in the center to form a shape like a wishbone, which gives the plant its common name. Some sources describe the flowers as purple, pink or white, and the blooming season runs from summer into fall.
The plant is native to southern and southeastern Asia.

02 · How to grow
How to grow torenia from seed
Sowing. Start seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before the average last frost date. Transplant the seedlings outdoors after the risk of frost has passed. Because the plant dislikes root disturbance, use biodegradable pots that can go straight into the ground.
Light and soil. The plant does best in a sunny spot but tolerates some shade. Compact types thrive in morning sun and afternoon shade, and they can be planted in part to full shade. Plant it in rich, moist soil and mulch to keep the roots cool.
Trailing types. The trailing type sold under names such as Summer Wave and Catalina does not produce seed, so it is only available as a plant. The seed-grown compact types are the ones described here.
03 · Care
Caring for torenia
Watering and feeding. Keep the soil moist but well drained. Feed with a multipurpose plant food through the growing season. Compact types also do well with a slow-release fertilizer and a layer of mulch.
Shaping. Pinch the plants back to keep them bushy. If they become leggy, cut them back by half to encourage bushier growth and possibly more flowers. Compact types bloom without deadheading.
