How it works

Five steps from seed to results

Every Battle runs the same way, so you always know what's next and when.

  1. Step 1: Join

Pick a Battle, read its rules and join with a free account. Registration stays open until the Battle ends.

  2. Step 2: Sow

Sow the Battle's seed the way its rules say, at home, on a balcony or in the garden.

  3. Step 3: Post weekly

Post one photo entry each week with how your plant is doing. Real photos of your own plants only.

  4. Step 4: Judging

After the end, judges score every grower against the Battle's published criteria and check the photos.

  5. Step 5: Results

Winners are announced on the Battle page, get a badge on their profile and are featured on the homepage.

Fair play

Judged on criteria, not on likes

Popularity and judging are kept apart, so a grower with fewer followers has the same chance.

The official ranking

Judges score each grower on the criteria listed on the Battle page, with the weight of each one shown up front. In a fastest-germination Battle, the sprout times growers report are checked against their photos before results.

The community favorite

Marking entries as helpful picks a separate community favorite. It's a nice honor, and it never changes the official ranking.

House rules

  • Real photos of your own plants only, nothing taken from the internet.
  • One entry per week, posted in the Battle's own weeks.
  • Every photo is checked before it shows publicly, and location data is removed.
  • Signed-in growers can report an entry that breaks the rules, and moderators review every report.

Questions

Questions about Battles

Does it cost anything to join a Battle?
No. Battles are free. You need a free SeedBattle account with a confirmed email address to join and post entries.
Are there prizes?
Only when a Battle's page names one. We list a prize only once it's secured. Otherwise winners get a Battle winner badge on their profile and are featured on the SeedBattle homepage.
How are winners chosen?
Judges score every grower against the criteria listed on the Battle page, where each criterion's weight is shown. Likes and helpful votes don't count toward the official ranking; they pick a separate community favorite.
How do I enter?
Join the Battle on its page and accept the rules. Once it starts, post one photo entry per week from the Battle page. Entries are public posts with at least one photo of your own plant.
Can I join a Battle that has already started?
Yes. You can join while registration is open and while the Battle is running. Weeks before you joined simply have no entry from you.
Can I leave a Battle?
Yes, before it starts. Open the Battle's page and choose "Leave this Battle".
What happens to my photos?
Every photo is checked before it shows publicly, and location data and other hidden details are removed from the file. Only real photos of your own plants are allowed.
