01 · Overview
About statice
Statice, Limonium sinuatum, is also called sea lavender or wavyleaf sea lavender. It bears papery, funnel-shaped flowers in many colors, and these are often used in dried arrangements. The plant is native to northern Africa, western Asia and Europe. Its stems are erect, hairy and three-winged, and its leaves are lobed and lance-shaped. Descriptions differ on its lifecycle: one calls it a short-lived perennial that can be grown as an annual in zones above 8 or as a biennial, while another lists it as an annual.

02 · How to grow
How to grow statice from seed
Start seeds indoors in 50-cell flats or another seedling tray, about 5 to 6 weeks before planting out. Direct sowing outdoors is not recommended for this plant. Cover the seed only lightly, just enough to hold it in place, because light helps it sprout. Seeds sprout in 5 to 14 days at 70 °F (21 °C). Once the seedlings emerge, keep them at about 60 °F (16 °C) for 1 to 2 weeks to encourage roots. Harden off the seedlings and transplant them outside after the danger of frost has passed. Plant in full sun in light, sandy loam that drains well.
03 · Care
Caring for statice
Water sparingly, since the plant is drought tolerant once it is established, and overwatering can cause root and crown rot. Deadheading isn’t needed because each plant produces one long bloom.
